I think what is coming out from Moscow these days are insinuations asserted by major Russian leaders cast in the language of the underworld that if "If the Ukraine doesn't acquiesce to what Russia wants, Russia will simply continue to snip away whole areas of its land." In other words, "If you don't go along with what I want, I'll take it from you, anyway!" Now, I think the Ukrainians know this language very well and have had enough. That's why they chased their President back to Russia some months ago!
It remains whether the EU will stand with the Ukrainians to thwart this continuing take-away of Ukrainian soil by Russia. Ever-diminishing in size, The Ukraine, contiguous to EU's sphere of influence, should not fall to an imperial power, because it had no one to go to for help. Where is the United Nations to protect the territorial boundaries of member nations? Where is the World Trade Organization that demands from each member state a serious pledge to respect any nation's integrity and sovereignty as lawfully prescribed through treaty and agreement?
